Bali

Spiritual, sensual, and endlessly beautiful

IndonesiaLuxury Travel Guide

Why Visit Bali?

Bali occupies a rare position in global travel — it is simultaneously one of the most visited islands in the world and one of the most genuinely spiritual places a traveller can experience. The Balinese Hindu culture permeates every aspect of island life, from the daily offerings placed outside every business to the elaborate temple ceremonies that happen almost daily somewhere on the island. Against this backdrop, Bali has built a luxury hospitality scene of extraordinary quality — private pool villas in jungle settings, world-class spa retreats, and a culinary scene that has grown far beyond its tropical-fusion origins.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended

May to September

The dry season brings lower humidity, clear skies, and excellent conditions for surfing on the west coast beaches. July and August are peak season with the best weather but highest prices and busiest conditions.

Worth Noting

November to March is the wet season with frequent tropical downpours, though they are often short-lived. Many villa resorts remain excellent value in the shoulder wet season.

Top Experiences

1

Ubud: Culture & Jungle

Ubud is Bali's cultural and spiritual heart — set in the mountains above rice terraces and surrounded by jungle. The Royal Palace, the Sacred Monkey Forest, and the Tegallalang rice terraces are within walking or short driving distance. The restaurant scene (Locavore, Sari Organik) is world-class.

2

Seminyak Beach Clubs

The stretch of beach from Seminyak through Canggu is lined with luxurious beach clubs — Potato Head, Ku De Ta, La Plancha — where daybeds, cocktails, and sunset DJs make afternoons an event in themselves. The area's dining scene is equally strong.

3

Private Villa Stays

Bali perfected the private villa concept. Hundreds of villas with private pools, personal chefs, and dedicated staff can be rented for less than comparable hotels. Areas like Canggu, Uluwatu, and the Ubud countryside offer the finest inventory.

4

Spa & Wellness

Balinese massage is a deeply therapeutic tradition combining pressure and stretching techniques developed over centuries. COMO Shambhala Estate near Ubud offers multi-day wellness immersions. AYANA Resort in Jimbaran houses the Aquatonic Sea Water Therapy Pool carved into the clifftop above the Indian Ocean.

5

Uluwatu Temple & Kecak Fire Dance

Perched on a 70-metre limestone cliff above the ocean, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali's six key temples. Each evening at sunset, the Kecak fire dance is performed on the cliff edge against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean — one of Southeast Asia's great cultural spectacles.

Local Tips

  • Hire a private driver for the duration of your stay — a full day costs around £30–50 and is far more convenient than taxis
  • Download Grab for on-demand car booking; standard taxis can be unreliable outside hotel forecourts
  • Temple dress codes are strictly enforced — always carry a sarong (sold everywhere for a few thousand rupiah)
  • The Balinese calendar differs from the Gregorian; Nyepi (Day of Silence) closes the island entirely for 24 hours each spring
  • Exchange currency at authorised money changers only — avoid street changers who may use sleight of hand
  • The Ngurah Rai International Airport is in Denpasar; allow extra time during the July–August peak season
